EP 152: Pivoting Toward Profit Through Positivity and Beauty Boxes with Kate Jaksik

The power of positivity is something I have believed in and talked about for years, especially as it relates to business success, but pivoting has been the big “P word” and theme of business throughout this pandemic, especially for the aesthetics industry.

Well, when you pair the two together like my guest on this episode of Spa Marketing Made Easy did, it results in revenue because –

1 – People like to buy from positive people

2 – Positive people keep their mind open to new ideas

3 – New ideas harnessed can bring forth new streams of revenue

My guest is none other than one of my Spa Retail Rockstars, Kate Jaksik, who is the owner of Glow Beauty Bar in Florence, Massachusetts, where she and her team provide salon, spa, and makeup artistry services.

When news of the Covid-19 closures hit, rather than recoiling in fear, Kate sprung into action to keep her business healthy and her team employed.

Through that action and determination to stay positive in the face of the pandemic, Kate conceptualized an idea that in the last several months has evolved and quickly become an offering both she and her audience are passionate about.

And oh yes, it’s profitable, too.

Tune in to hear the behind-the-scenes on the beauty box craze that Kate created and fueled with her audience through pure positivity and the power of ecommerce and social media selling.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • The steps Kate immediately took when first notices of closures hit
  • How Kate conceptualized her Beauty Box idea after offering discounts that didn’t provide the additional profit she needed
  • The process of creating a new product and continually refining it throughout the shutdown to help maximize sales and profitability as well as a peek into her sales approach
  • Kate’s motivation for forging ahead during trying times and how she kept on the path of positivity to not just survive, but thrive
  • Where she is taking her Beauty Box idea next and the continued evolution she’ll pursue past the shutdown of her spa and salon

EP 150: 3 Ways to Reward Loyal Clients

Loyalty isn’t something to be taken lightly.

After all, that’s what we always aim for with every new client who walks through our doors – that they will always choose to book with us and make us their go-to aesthetic expert for years to come.

While this loyalty obviously comes from providing great service that delivers results, a key piece of business is building relationships, so when someone shows their loyalty, it pays dividends to reward it.

Whether you already have a loyalty system in place and want to extend another element of loyalty rewards to bring in more referrals, or you’re brand new to business and want to get people incentivized to come back repeatedly, there’s never a bad time to layer in loyalty perks into your aesthetic practice!

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why rewarding loyal clients is critical for both retention and referrals
  • My top 3 ideas for rewarding client loyalty at varying levels
  • Why you may want to have multiple loyalty reward strategies and how to determine a loyalty structure that supports your bottom line

EP 148: Developing the Critical Skill of Treating Multicultural Skin with JoElle Lee

It’s no secret that if you want to have a long-term and sustainable career in aesthetics, you have to stay committed to a constant development of your aesthetic skill set.

And as my guest on this episode of Spa Marketing Made Easy shares, one of the most critical skills requires branching out beyond what is traditionally and currently taught in aesthetics school and learning to properly treat multicultural skin.

Meet JoElle Lee, a skincare expert and celebrity aesthetician (she was Michelle Obama’s aesthetician!), a professional speaker and published author, as well as an educator, trainer and skincare business consultant.

JoElle is a woman who wears many hats, but her mission is highly focused on ensuring that every aesthetic professional knows how to treat multicultural skin safely and effectively.

I don’t know about you, but when I went to aesthetics school, we weren’t taught specific protocols to treat darker skin tones and the conditions that commonly affect people of color.

It’s a piece of our traditional and structured education that needs to evolve, but at the end of the day, it’s up to us as experts and practitioners to seek out and complete the continued education needed so that we can provide the best care for our clients no matter where they fall on the Fitzpatrick scale.

And I’m so excited for you to tune into this episode, because JoElle is the ultimate expert to learn from!

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • JoElle’s background in the aesthetics industry and her claim to fame as First Lady, Michelle Obama’s, aesthetician among other notable people who need to always be camera-ready
  • Why learning the skill of how to treat multicultural skin is critical for any aesthetician who wants a sustainable career
  • How JoElle discovered and developed her own method to treating multicultural skin
  • What drove JoElle into the education space and the formats in which she teaches other aesthetic professionals on fully rounding out their expertise by learning how to care for all skin types

EP 146: A Step-by-Step Process to Hiring Your Dream Team

Whether you’re ready to scale your aesthetic practice by growing your team now, or you’ve got a vision for expanding beyond being a solo in the future, having a thorough understanding of the hiring process will always serve you well.

( Yes, even if you never hire and you’re an employee, knowing how employers are approaching the hiring process is still a fantastic piece of knowledge to have in your backpocket.)

Often I hear about hiring disappointments like not getting any great candidates to interview or finding someone you thought was promising only to be let down shortly thereafter.

Listen, there will always be rough patches in the process of building your team, sometimes no matter how much prep and precaution you take, you’ll still hire the person you thought was great, and for whatever reason, it doesn’t pan out.

Scenarios like these can wear you down and make you weary about trusting other people inside your business, but I’m here to share with you my tried-and-true process that will allow you to build the dream team that can take you and your business to new heights with minimal rough patches along the way.

From finding the best possible candidates straight out the gate to knowing how to navigate an interview and your new employee’s first quarter on your team.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How to craft your hiring ads and where to place them to find candidates quickly
  • My 2-step interview process to ensure you only conduct productive in-person interviews
  • Why you should consider having a 90-day probation period for new hires and what that looks like
  • How properly praise and encourage your team members as well as have the tough conversations with ease
  • Setting expectations for professional development and how this benefits your team long-term

EP 145: Pivoting Through the Pandemic with Sara and Melissa of Sykes & Lanno Skinbar

We may not be out of the woods with COVID-19 just yet, but as my Growth Factor students Sara and Melissa of Sykes & Lanno Skinbar have shown, we can still navigate through it with total grace and grit.

Since the start of 2020, Sara, Melissa, and I have sat down to record an episode every month as they chronicle their journey to becoming a 7-figure spa.

Of course, we could’ve never known that 2020 would throw the curveball of coronavirus, but as you’ll hear in this episode, continuing to pivot through the pandemic five months in can not only be possible, but profitable.

Be sure to listen to all of our previous episodes that chronicle their journey thus far, but especially our previous episode, Episode 137, where we discussed getting their ecommerce store set up in record speed, selling unique packages of their products to drum up new interest from their existing highly-loyal clientele, as well as attracting the attention of new clients and customers.

Now, as they reopen their doors for treatments and services, you’ll hear how they’re staying nimble and adaptable while still leveraging everything they’ve built during the shutdown.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Sara and Melissa’s re-opening strategy and how they’re approaching the various phases of re-opening from a state-mandated level and what they feel comfortable with
  • Why they crafted new services to fall into their re-opening phases and to get clients back in the groove of coming to their clinic
  • Their thought-process around the potential case of a second shutdown and how they would continue to pivot
  • The biggest factors in how they’ve been able to remain connected to their clientele and continue to keep their business growth on an upward trajectory through the pandemic

EP 144: Using Facebook Ads to Generate Leads on Autopilot with Jackie Ellis

There are two critical pieces to any service-based business: gaining clients and retaining clients.

As an aesthetic expert, retention is really where your focus should be as this is:

1) where you have the greatest chance of success because once someone is on your table, you have the opportunity to provide a tremendous experience and educate them on the importance of continually working with you

2) retention is what will increase the client’s lifetime value to your business

However, instead of focusing on retention of the clients who have already made their way through your doors, what I see many aestheticians and spa owners heavily focusing their time and energy on is lead generation.

It’s a constant cycle of chasing the next client, and it’s exhausting.

What if, instead of spending all your marketing time trying to get brand new people through your doors, you focus your attention on those who are the easiest to sell to (aka the people who have already bought from you before), and let Facebook ads take care of the lead generation on autopilot?

Sound too good to be true?

Meet Jackie Ellis, my personal Facebook ads extraordinaire on team AddoAesthetics who has managed Facebook ads for businesses of all sizes and scale.

As a former fitness professional turned digital marketer, Jackie spent 18 years  in the fitness industry doing everything from teaching classes and training clients to eventually managing a local health and tennis club, which is where she found her true passion in marketing and copywriting.

She knows all about the pull to constantly drive new clients through the door of a brick-and-mortar business, but as you’ll hear her explain in this episode, there is a better way, and that way is called Facebook ads.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why many aestheticians are wearing all the hats, and how it’s not sustainable
  • How the framework of figuring out Facebook ads and marketing works just like the processes of your aesthetic expertise
  • Why it’s critical to understand the power of Facebook ads and how to leverage them in your aesthetic practice
  • What to consider when outsourcing your Facebook ads creation and management

EP 143: Using the Power of Video to Sell More Products and Services with Brandon Lucero

If you’ve been on your aesthetic business journey for a while, at this point, you know about the opportunities that video marketing provides.

And if you’re brand new to building a business, the best time to learn about harnessing the power of video is NOW.

Video marketing isn’t anything new, however, it is currently the most effective method for connecting with your ideal clients for a few reasons:

1 – Video currently reigns supreme on all social platforms both for organic reach as well as for driving paid traffic.

2 – Video is highly leverage-able (yes, let’s roll with that word) in that it can be utilized in a number of different ways. My guest in this episode will dive more into the details, but in essence, we’re talking: create one great piece of video content, and get even more content out of it.

3 – Video is the most powerful medium in that your ideal client can both see and hear you, creating an instant connection that’s as close to an in-person connection as you can get.

Video, as you’ll learn in this episode, is the ultimate marketing medium, and here to teach you more about it is my guest, Brandon Lucero, the founder of Sold With Video and creator of the Video 4x Effect.

As a student of Brandon’s Video 4x Effect program, I can vouch for the success of his systems and proven methodology that shifts how online content is created and distributed by changing beliefs, shifting perspective and the psychology of selling products online so you can move your audience into a buying state of mind while growing your brand.

Seriously, he’s a video genius, and it goes far beyond the simple things like having the right lighting…in fact, that really has nothing to do with it.

It’s about messaging, about the people you’re speaking to and calling to action, and it’s about the sequencing, all of which you’ll get the high-level overview of when you tune in to this episode.

So sit back, and start taking notes, because after you’re done listening, you’ll have what you need to start leveraging video and start selling more today.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why video is the critical medium for standing out online and what you need to have first before creating any video content
  • Brandon’s three primary focus areas of content plus a bonus category that will work well for aestheticians and aesthetic experts
  • Why 1-2 videos isn’t enough to gain traction with video marketing and how videos in various categories work together to support your potential client or customer through the journey to working with or buying from you
  • Brandon’s top tips for how to maximize your effort and maximize your time when creating video to use in your marketing
  • Elements of your video you need to have dialed in to help your ideal client see and take action on your content

EP 142: Processing Emotions and Releasing Anxiety Through Imagery with Mandy Barbee

You may be looking at the title of this episode and thinking, “Huh? How does processing emotions have anything to do with marketing?”

Well, it may not be an obvious correlation, but our emotional well-being and mental health is absolutely critical for running a strong and successful business, so while the connection may be more indirect than, say, strategy, it’s vital none-the-less.

As a very analytical and strategic-minded person, I’ve always had an inclination to keep business life and personal life in their own containers. Neat in their own separate spaces.

But after navigating my own difficult season of life where emotions couldn’t be turned off with the flip of a switch or contained in it’s own space, I learned exactly what it meant to have your personal life and mental state affect your business.

In that chapter of anxiety and sadness, I reached out to my guest on this episode, Mandy Barbee, a transformation and healing expert who’s helped hundreds of people all over the world to overcome anxiousness and thrive by combining the power of imagery with their own innate capabilities.

Mandy founded her company, Palladium Mind, to empower others by sharing the easiest ways to transcend dis-ease to enjoy everything more, and having experienced her work for myself, I can say working with her was truly transformative.

Her method, tools, and approach to the mental blocks that many entrepreneurs face (such as anxiousness, self worth, self doubt, imposter syndrome, just to name a few), was unlike anything I had experienced and was extremely powerful.

Now I’m happy to finally have Mandy here on the show to explore this link between our emotional state and our journey as entrepreneurs, and I think our conversation couldn’t have come at a better time.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • My personal experience with Mandy’s work and how it helped me to overcome extreme stress anxiety during a difficult season of my life that was also affecting my business
  • How working in and through imagery to process emotions can help you get over habits, blocks, and other emotional walls that are holding you back
  • Why it’s critical we learn how to acknowledge, process, and tap into emotions and do so quickly as not to harbor anxiety or other negative emotions
  • Tips for navigating gaining and receiving outside help in the realm of guidance, therapy, and other healing work

EP 141: Defying Doubt to Chase Your Dreams with Lauren Hum, CEO of Orchid Skin Company

Ever met someone and intuitively knew they had something special, but then you hear their story and they not only confirm that belief, but simply blow you away?

That’s what happened when I met my Growth Factor Framework student and guest on this episode, Lauren Hum.

Lauren is the founder and CEO of Orchid Skin Company, her brick and mortar spa and online business that she has built to be one of the most successful spas in her state and region.

What started as a quarter-life crisis that pushed Lauren to follow a childhood dream and enroll in beauty school at the age of 27, while 4 months pregnant with her first child, and to the skepticism of some family members, her life experiences during this time and the support she received from classmates and school staff created a deep gratitude for the people in the beauty industry.

After graduating, Lauren opted for the entrepreneurial path and started her business from her sofa with a laptop in one arm and a newborn in the other.

In less than 3 years, she has built a loyal, high-value customer base by carving out a niche as one of the first microbladers in her state and creating a powerful online presence that led to the multi-six figure business, Orchid Skin Company, she has today.

Living in Conway, Arkansas with her husband, Patrick, 3-year-old son, Luke, plus her beloved goldendoodle, Willow, and rescue mutt, Chaco, Lauren’s next leg of her entrepreneurial journey is to help other beauty industry professionals find financial stability while doing the work they love and inspiring them to create the life they truly want.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How Lauren’s dream to go to beauty school was met with skepticism and it led to following a different path than the one on her heart
  • How she made the decision to defy the doubt and go after her dream of working in the beauty and aesthetic industry
  • The personal tragedy she faced while going to aesthetic school and how she overcame adversity to finish strong
  • Why she chose the entrepreneurial path and the intentional steps she took to quickly grow her  spa to a multiple six-figure business in a small town and her desire to help other aestheticians do the same
